Kolukkumalai is one of the highest mountains in the western ghats where the   world’s highest tea plantation is situated at a height of 7900 feet. It shares a border with Kerala and Tamilnadu.  How we planned the trip? Me and my two colleagues, Stijin and Kavya were working in an advertising firm and were thinking of going to some place to spend a weekend long away from the madding crowd and bustling noises of everyday life. Kattikayam Waterfalls - The hidden beauty of Kottayam

 


Tucked away in the lush greenery of Kottayam, Kerala, India, lies a hidden gem that few travelers have the fortune to discover—a serene waterfall, far removed from the usual tourist trails. This secluded cascade, nestled deep within the Western Ghats, offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Surrounded by dense forests and rich biodiversity, the waterfall remains largely untouched, making Kattikayam falls a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts seeking solitude.

The journey to this hidden waterfall is an adventure in itself. Only a healthy and adventourous person should dare visit this place. The route to Kattikayam waterfalls is a bit confusing but with you can rely on google maps till Kanjiram kavala on the Erattupetta Muttom Road. From Kanjiram Kavala you have to take a deviation to the left towards Mechal. From then the local people will help with the excat direction. I went there with my Classic 350 so I had the best views of the surrounding misty hills on the way. There is a parking area before we reach the destiation. The old lady who takes cares of the parking area was friendly and offered me a refreshing Tea. It takes Winding paths through small terrain yet slippery during monsoon, the sound of chirping birds, and the sound of the river nearby add to the thrill of exploration. The air is filled with the earthy scent of wet soil and the rustle of leaves, creating an immersive experience that brings you closer to nature. It takes a tiresome trail going down to the waterfall. As you approach the waterfall, the distant roar of water becomes louder, building anticipation for the breathtaking sight that awaits.

Upon reaching the waterfall, visitors are greeted by a stunning sight—a cascade of crystal-clear water tumbling down rocky cliffs into a pristine pool below. The sunlight filtering through the canopy above creates a magical interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the waterfall’s ethereal beauty. The area around the pool is ideal for a refreshing dip, and the cool water offers a perfect respite from the tropical heat.

This hidden waterfall in Kerala is not just a visual delight but also a place of deep serenity. The absence of large crowds allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the peaceful surroundings, making it an ideal spot for meditation, photography, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. Whether you're an avid trekker or someone seeking a peaceful retreat, this secret waterfall offers an unforgettable experience, a true slice of paradise hidden in the heart of Kerala.
