Day 1: The Journey to Hampi
Traveling solo is a blend of liberation and reflection, and my two-day escapade to Hampi was no exception. My journey began in Goa, where I boarded a train that promised scenic landscapes. As the train rumbled past the lush Western Ghats, the journey's highlight appeared — the majestic Dudhsagar Waterfalls. The cascading waters, roaring amidst the green backdrop, were a visual treat that heightened my anticipation for the adventure ahead.
I reached Hospete Junction late at night. The station was abuzz with travelers, yet an air of tranquility prevailed. After some haggling, I hopped into a tuk-tuk for Rs. 250. The 30-minute ride to Hampi was serene, the quiet roads lit only by the occasional streetlight. My accommodation was a small, cozy homestay nestled near the Tungabhadra River. The warm welcome and homely vibe instantly made me feel at ease.
Day 2: Immersed in the Splendor of Hampi
Sunrise from Virupaksha Temple |
The next morning, I rose early and set out to explore. My first stop was the Virupaksha Temple, a towering testament to Hampi’s rich heritage. As the first rays of sunlight bathed the historic architecture, the temple seemed to come alive, every detail of its intricate carvings glowing. Walking through its ancient corridors, I marveled at the sculptures — each narrating a story, each whispering echoes of a bygone era.
Evening: Along the River to the Golden Chariot

Back at the homestay, I connected with fellow travelers, many of whom were foreign tourists. The conversations were rich with tales of adventures across continents. It was heartening to see how travel binds us all, weaving a tapestry of shared human experiences.
Day 3: Trekking and Cycling through Time
Morning: Sunrise at Mathanga Hills
View from Mathanga Hills |
The next morning, I embarked on a trek to the Mathanga Hills. Reaching the summit just as the sun broke over the horizon, I was greeted with a bird’s-eye view of Hampi. The landscape, dotted with ancient ruins and verdant expanses, looked almost surreal. It was a moment of quiet introspection, a reminder of the timeless beauty that exists beyond the rush of everyday life.
Afternoon: Exploring Hampi by Cycle
Lotus Temple |
The afternoon was dedicated to exploring Hampi’s treasures on two wheels. My first stop was the Underground Shiva Temple, an architectural wonder partially submerged and steeped in mystique. I then visited the Queen’s Bath, Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, and the Guards’ Chamber. Each site revealed a different facet of Hampi’s grandeur, a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of its creators.
Evening: Farewell to Hampi
As the day came to an end, I enjoyed a hearty meal of local delicacies at the homestay. The warmth of the hosts and the authenticity of the food added a homely charm to the trip.
That evening, I boarded an overnight train to Bangalore, carrying with me memories of a journey that was as enriching as it was rejuvenating.
Reflections on the Trip
Hampi is more than a destination — it’s an experience. Its ruins speak of a glorious past, its landscapes inspire serenity, and its people exude warmth. This solo trip, though brief, was a journey into history, culture, and self-discovery.
If you’re planning a solo adventure, let Hampi be on your list. Go for the history, stay for the sunsets, and leave with a piece of its magic in your heart.
